More Than Development: Watching the Vision for Green Mill Village Take Shape

There are some projects you work on for a season, and there are others you have the privilege of watching grow over many years.

For me, Green Mill Village has been the latter.

I have been involved with the marketing and development of Green Mill Village since 2006, and over that time, I have watched the vision for this property evolve alongside the City of Arcola itself. What started as an ambitious idea for a 65-acre development has continued to become something much larger: a place that connects people, businesses, travelers, residents and surrounding communities in a way that creates real economic momentum.

And today, that momentum is becoming increasingly visible.

Growth That Builds on Growth

One of the things I have always appreciated about the vision behind Green Mill Village is that it has never been about developing one building or filling one lot. The owners of Green Mill Village, AF Holding Company, have continued to think much further ahead than that.

Their vision has always been about creating an environment where different pieces of a community can work together. Hospitality supports tourism. Housing supports workforce development. Businesses create jobs. Residents create customers. Events bring visitors. Visitors discover the community. New development creates opportunities for even more investment.

That is where the real impact begins. When those pieces start working together, development becomes more than construction. It creates synergy.

For years, communities throughout Central Illinois have talked about the importance of working together rather than operating within individual boundaries. Having worked with Green Mill Village for so many years, I have also had the opportunity to watch Arcola continue to evolve. There is a tremendous amount of pride in this community, and rightfully so.

Arcola has managed to maintain the personality and relationships of a small town while continuing to look for ways to grow. Strong schools, a recognizable tourism identity, easy interstate access, local businesses and a community that knows how to welcome people all contribute to its potential.

But economic growth rarely comes from one single project. It happens when one investment makes the next investment more possible. A new business creates jobs. New jobs create housing demand. More residents support local businesses. More visitors support hospitality and tourism. Increased activity creates additional opportunities for development.

I have been in marketing long enough to know that the word “vision” gets used often. But true vision requires patience. It requires seeing what a property, a business or a community can become long before every piece is in place. It requires continuing to invest when the full picture may still be years away. And it requires understanding that sustainable growth is often created piece by piece.

That is what I believe AF Holding Company has done with Green Mill Village. The development we see today is not the finish line. It is another chapter in a vision that has been taking shape for years. And after being connected to this project since 2006, that may be the most exciting part for me.

I can look back and see how far Green Mill Village and Arcola have come, but I can also look at what is happening today and recognize how much opportunity still lies ahead. New housing. Continued commercial development. Hospitality. Tourism. Community partnerships. Regional connections.

Each one strengthens the others. For me, that is the story of Green Mill Village.

It is not simply about developing 65 acres.
